This diy toothpaste recipe might not be for everyone, but it is definitely worth trying out if you are a) looking to start reducing your waste and packaging or b) looking to try something new. Its fun to make (get your family involved) and I recommend you give it a go, even just once.
A huge plus to making your own toothpaste and any skincare products for that matter, is cost, you not only save yourself some money, but you are also helping the environment in one go, you have nothing to loose right?
ingredients
- 2 heaped tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp of bicarbonate of soda
- 20 drops of essential oil – you could choose from; peppermint, oregano, cinnamon, spearmint or tea tree – i personally love cinnamon in my toothpaste! cinnamon in everything please! it also leaves your mouth feeling so fresh and clean!

- find an small-ish airtight container
- mix your ingredients together in said container
- remember to do a taste test, you can do this throughout the process to get the toothpaste to your liking
- does it taste too salty? you can just add some more coconut oil and essential oil to suit your taste
- when you are happy with your diy toothpaste creation, tightly close the lid and use as you need to.
- this recipe lasts up to 6 months – I would advise to pop a label or write on the container, so you know when to make some more.
tips
- this diy toothpaste will not froth and foam like regular toothpaste, so that is definitely something you get used to
- there will not be much flavour to the toothpaste, which may put some people off, but after a few uses, you get the gist of things and it becomes the new normal
- I suggest using a lolly stick to apply the toothpaste from the container to your brush, as this keeps everything hygienic, you don’t want any nasties making their way into your mouth.
