Having a cat doesn’t mean you have to scrap your idea of an indoor jungle. Hear me out: You can definitely have both — healthy cats and green decor — as long as you research and make sure your plant babies are non toxic and will not harm your cat. As we all know they like to experiment and nibble leaves now and then.
hibiscus
Definitely one of my favourite flowers, they are beautiful, tropical and fairly easy to keep. They come in a number of varieties and colours. Definitely try on if these if you are wanting a taste of the tropics.
ferns
I love a good fern, I currently have 2 and luckily that most of these beautiful plants are cat safe ~ stick to the Pteridophyta variety. They can really add something special and tropical to your decor. the following are safe for felines: Boston, Maindenhair, Bird’s Nest, Staghorn, Asparagus, Ball, Blood Sword, Rabbit’s Foot, Duffii, Dwarf Feather, Verona and Christmas.
sunflowers
These are the ultimate happy flowers. They can really brighten up a room with their huge bright yellow blooms and lift the mood in any space. {Make sure to check they are genuine sunflowers and not daisies shielding as sunflowers as daisies are toxic}.
baby’s breath
I absolutely love this fluffy flowering plant. You’ve no doubt come across this before as it is often used in flower bouquets. I love to to use baby’s breath for my blog photos as it’s so fluffy and add beautiful texture. (Be sure to check it’s not maiden’s breath as this look similar, but the flowers are larger and dangerous for cats.)
prayer plant
If you read my recent 5 Best Low Light Houseplants post you will have read that Prayer Plants are one of my favourite plants to keep, they are so beautiful, grow quite large, have big leaves and can really make an impact to any room, plus their leaves close at night ~ hence Prayer. They are easy to keep, but love humidity and great they are non toxic to our four legged friends.
spider plant
Another one of my favourites, super easy bro keep and a great plant for hanging in corners of rooms. It has beautiful green and white leaves that flow over plant pots. They can thrive pretty much anywhere.
(most) succulents
I am a self confessed succulent addict, I have 5 now and love them. They can be really easy to keep once you get the care routine down. They like sunlight and look perfect on window sills. Watch out for aloe, jade, pencil cactus as these are toxic to cats.
cast iron plant
As the name suggests this plant is pretty much indestructible, it’s the perfect houseplant for beginners and cat overs. It spiky leaves add some personality to any room and it just requires it’s leaves wiping down now and then.
roses
You can’t beat a beautiful rose, it’s iconic and indicative of love which is great because it’s safe around cats too, just make sure your kitty doesn’t get hold of any thorns!
bromeliads
I think this was one of the first ever plants I owned. It’s a moderately easy to keep tropical plant and is non toxic to our cat friends. It requires bright sunlight, regular watering and when it flowers it has a adds a burst of tropical colour and life to any room.
Be sure to double and triple check the plants you are purchasing as some plants within the same family can be toxic. If you believe your cat has ingested a toxic plant please contact your vet immediately. It’s always better to be on the safe side so both your cats and plants can live in perfect harmony!

This is a great post for cat owners everywhere. I love my cats, I do, but they don’t make it easy to keep houseplants! They have a habit of getting into everything and anything I own, digging in the dirt and chewing on the leaves. I have tried putting things up out of their reach on shelves or on the mantle, only to have them somehow (magically, I swear) get up on these surfaces that they have NEVER been up on before and knock them down lol Any plant that comes into our house has to be cat friendly.
Hahaha it’s like they seek out the danger lol. Cats are hilarious! Lucky Loki doesn’t pay too much attention to them, the odd paw boxing session now and then haha. I’d love to have a indoor jungle but too risky!
