Sustainably and zero waste products are becoming more and more popular as people are starting to understand the need to reduce waste and reuse products.
When it comes to my period I recently became aware of just how bad sanitary products can be for the environment, a lot end up in landfills, for example sanitary towels can take 100’s of years to decompose, which is incredibly harmful to the planet. I generally use tampons and towels and with my period generally lasts 4-5 days, this creates a lot of plastic waste, which can be avoided by using sustainable options.

Sustainable period products are becoming much more readily available and you can even see them popping up in mainstream supermarkets, which is fantastic. In an effort to reduce my period waste I’ve been trying out various sustainment options, some I got along with more than others. Whilst I understand these options might not suit anyone, they are definitely worth trying.

Top Eco-Friendly Period Products
- Menstrual Cup
- Period Underwear
- Reusable Sanitary Pads
- Organic Tampons with Reusable Applicator
- Plastic Free Sanitary Products
1. Menstrual Cup
Probably the most interesting on the list, I have tried cups a few times in the past and personally I can’t get along with them, I will continue to try them, as I love the idea, and the fact they are leak free. The thing is with cups is that everyone’s “insides” are different sizes and shapes, so it’s not a one size fits all situation (although they do have size options, but not many right now). I’d definitely recommend giving menstrual cups a try, there are plenty of sustainable options available if they don’t work for you.
2. Period Underwear
I have tried a few brands of period underwear and WUKA has come out on too for me. They are super comfortable, come is a range of sizes and they just work! I feel secure, comfy and safe in the knowledge I won’t have any embarrassing leaks. They don’t smell, just rinse before washing in the machine.
WUKA now offer a full range of period products from leggings to shorts and things, there is something for everyone and every occasion.
3. Reusable Sanitary Pads
Another of my go to choices. Anything comfy I am down for. These have the same thought behind them as period pants and in fact are a good transition into pants if you are a little unsure. I use some lovely soft cotton pads from Eco Dreams, which I love and have been using for the past 2 years!! and yes, they are still in fab condition, as i’ve looked after them well. Think of the planet and how much you will be helping! These pads come in different sizes for day, night and liners.
4. Organic Tampons with Reusable Applicator
Regular sanitary towels and tampons contains so much plastic and can take hundreds of years to decompose, so using organic tampons with Reuse-able applicators is definitely a way to prevent unnecessary use plastics . They work in exact the same way, just have a Reuseable applicator 🙂 jobs a good un! Definitely worth trying if you aren’t looking to make any “drastic changes” brand to check out would be Daye ~ they have some great option and their brand aesthetic is on point!
5. Plastic Free Sanitary Products
This is super important and there is one brand who is leading the way for plastic free sanitary products. And that’s natracare. Their commitment to sustainability and toxic free is to be applauded. I’ve always enjoyed using their products, especially the pads, they are super comfortable and no leaks! Definitely a brand to try if you have sensitive skin and want to reduce plastics.
Will you be making a switch to sustainable periods? Another have you tried any of the products on this list?
