The UK Has Finally Abolished Tampon Tax

I posted in January last year about the controversial UK Tampon Tax and shared the #FREEPERIODS petition link and I am so pleased to say that the Tampon tax has finally been abolished in the UK after the government honoured its March commitment to remove VAT on sanitary products. Finally the government has something positive to report, just what we need right now.

This is going to help so many people! People should never have to pay extra on products which are unavoidable, profiting off periods is just downright rude and disgusting. Many people in the UK on lower incomes and the homeless have struggled to afford sanitary products due to the extra tax slapped on top and noone should ever have to suffer period poverty.

The move honours a government commitment to scrap the tax and is part of a wider strategy to make sanitary products affordable and available for all which includes:

• January 2020’s roll out of free period products for all young people in English state schools and colleges and extension of the scheme into 2021
• the NHS offering period products to every hospital patient who needs them (including long-term in-patients) since 2019
• the Tampon Tax Fund, established in 2015, which allocated the funds generated from VAT on period products to projects supporting vulnerable and excluded women and girls

I just want to thank every single person that campaigned for this and everyone that signed the petition. We actually went and did it!!

Unfortunately period pants and eco friendly options are not included in this and still have VAT attached, which is a little frustrating, there’s still more work to be done, but this is definitely a step int be right direction.
