But It Says Vegan?… Why Brand Labels Can Be Misleading

I’ve seen this question asked again and again on my Instagram page, blog and others. Can a product can be vegan friendly but NOT cruelty free?

No, it doesn’t really make sense does it? How do brands get away with marketing products as vegan friendly when they themselves are testing on animals ~ which completely negates why people become Vegan ~ to end harm to animals.

The way brands get around this is they use products which are not originated from animals or by products of animals, which makes them “suitable for vegans” but as we all know brands love to “twist the truth” shall we say…. L’Oréal and I’m looking at you.

These brands and many others seem to have jumped on the “green beauty” bandwagon trend, which seems to be popular at the moment and what they are doing is wrong and confusing for new vegans or people wanting to go cruelty free.

A good example of this marketing strategy in the beauty space is L’Oréal. L’Oréal is a huge conglomerate company with many brands under its umbrella and they test on animals, (a few brands owned by L’Oréal and Estée Lauder have maintained their cruelty free status by not selling in China).

This can quickly become rather confusing when you are bombarded with green beauty marketing and products makes with “vegan” formulas in the supermarkets, as if you didn’t deep dive into the brands, you would assume they are cruelty free right? It’s simply not the case, a good example of this is the Botanicals range from L’Oréal is NOT VEGAN or cruelty free… even though the label states, as L’Oréal as a brand, tests on animals and sells in China. NO!

I hate seeing these brands greenwashing and falsely advertise their products as green, eco friendly, fresh, clean, vegan, organic, natural and they are far from that ~ they are often packaged in green bottles with leafs/plants to give the illusion of vegan/green ingredients.

Please do your research into brands if you are considering going vegan or cruelty free, and remember that any brand can say a product is cruelty free, as this term is unregulated, which does need to change.

The only truly cruelty free products to be trusted are certified by the leaping bunny programme. Keep and eye out for these logos.
