Beauty reviews and short form videos are all over the internet now (so many reviews – so little time) and its the place most people tend go to when looking to buy a product, i know i certainly do. i like to search for swatches, watch youtube videos and TikTok’s, and see what the products actually looks like.
I invest alot of time into researching products i want to spend my money on. I wanted to share with you today a few tips I have picked up on my beauty blogging journey.
take high quality photos
If I’m honest, no one wants to see a blurry photo of a product, it’s good to see all the details, especially if it’s a foundation or textured skincare product.
Phones these days all have amazingly high quality cameras, so theres no need to have a fancy camera. Natural sunlight will be your best friend, unfortunately we lack that in our house so I relay on artificial lighting, which is great….. but I love the tones natural sunlight has.

avoid over editing
This is something i see alot on reviews, whilst its nice to have edited photos which follow a specific theme it does mask the actual look of the product.
Say if you wanted to buy a nude lipstick, and a filter was added and the lipstick ended up a pink/red shade – its not true to the product and doesn’t show it in its true light.
We have all been guilty of slapping an intense filter on a product photo at some point, myself included, but just remember to showcase the product in its true form, just tweak here and there.

dont forget the little details
Its also good to include the little details in a products review, like the packaging, the smell, the texture and how it feels on the skin. Explain to the reader in as much detail as you can how it looks to the eye, as if you were there explaining in person, it gives a good insight into the product and becomes a more personable review.

actually try the product
ok so this one may seem a bit obvious, but i have read many a review where the writer clearly hasn’t tried the product.
For each of my product reviews i like to try the product for AT LEAST 2 weeks so i can get a good feel of the product and how it works for me. Its not good enough to just swatch a product when you don’t know how it actually performs on the skin and all day, it isn’t giving the reader an honest review.

dont diss brands
This may be obvious, but i have seen it done before – especially on TikTok – where a creator has been bad mouthing a brand because they don’t like a product or it hasn’t worked how they expected. this is not good. don’t do it! remember these are businesses and it can damage their reputation AND YOURS, non e wants to work with someone who looks for faults and controversy.
If a product doesn’t work for you specifically does not mean it will be the same for someone else, so just be careful how you word your reviews and feelings on a product before pressing that publish button.
be fair, honest, but not cruel.
