Let me ask you this….Have you ever used up an entire eyeshadow palette?
I don’t think many of us have. I can safely say I have never used up an entire eyeshadow palette, or anything other than foundation or mascara to be honest.
It’s almost like there is this ‘fast fashion’ trend but makeup right now? So many new releases, and pressure to be current. Social media plays a huge part in this.
Since the 2020 lockdown, makeup and beauty content has literally blown up on social media and started the whole trying to go ‘viral trends’ and I feel that this mentality has had a significant negative effect on the beauty space, which was already oversaturated.

Trending makeup
People are now simply buying products for these trends or because influencers ‘rave’ about them (when in fact they are paid to tell you that!) it’s absolutely mad, there have been so many makeup releases trying to keep up and compete with each other to get that much prized viral status, like how often do you finish a 32 pan eyeshadow palette? Realistically…. Your not.
Confession time…. I’ve definitely fallen victim to, shall we call it ‘trending makeup’? I’ve guiltily brought products to try in the hope my content blows up on Instagram or TikTok. I’ve since stopped doing this and put myself on a spending ban, as I simply cannot justify adding to the problem of waste, greed and unnecessary spending.

One big problem with makeup is that it does expire rather quickly, mascara 3 months, lipstick 6 months, and although you can potentially use after this date, there is always a risk, I mean you would drink milk 3 months after the expiry… so why would we use a mascara?….
Should makeup be sustainable?
I’ve noticed there has definitely been a start on reuse-able packaging, sustainable recycling and reuse-ability, which I think is incredible and should be encouraged. I love the fact that some brands are re thinking packaging and releasing, for example eyeshadow palettes we can swap out a shade when (and if) we hit pan, or even I’ve been refillable glass foundation bottles. I’m in! More brands should be concentrating on rethinking their current packaging, rather than bringing out yet another primer or highlight to keep up with the next brand.

Is the size of products an issue?
Something else I have noticed is product sizes have have been increasing recently? Is it just me…. But why oh why do we need 30ml concealer? Why do we need yet MORE product?
I mean for most of us we are only, realistically using makeup for work in the morning or the occasional evening out, not MUA, everyday constant usage, which it seems a lot of products are generally catered for – alot of useable, which just isn’t your everyday ‘got to work’ makeup look.
I’d happy welcome a smaller foundation size or liquid eyeshadow that I know I could use up in 3 months and refill. That would be the dream right?

What are your thoughts on ‘trending makeup’ and sustainable options? Have got fallen victim to over buying simply to keep up with trend?
