So your in your local makeup counter staring at the hundreds of foundations on offer, eyeshadow palettes in all colours of the rainbow and you have the thought… Which one do I choose? What shades will suit my skintone best? Undertone what? I’ve been there many times in the past, so i know that exact feeling.
The undertones and shades of foundations can be pretty overwhelming if you are unsure what your actual skin undertone is, luckily there are a few a quick and easy ways to tell. There are 3 different undertones of skin, Neutral, Warm and Cool and here is how to identify which categories you fit in to. Once you know this, I promise you choosing foundations, eyeshadows, blush and any makeup will become so much easier.
Undertones
Warm – golden or yellow undertones to you skin would put you in the warm category
Cool – if you can see hints of blue, pink or red then you have a cool undertone to your skin
Neutral – neutral is basically a mix of mix warm and cool tones
How to determine your undertone
So there are a couple of super easy ways to check what undertone you are and it’s simply to look at the underside of your arm and look at what colour your veins are.
If your veins are green-olive you would be a warm undertone. If they are blue-purple you have more cool undertones to your skin and if they are a mix of blue-green you would be neutral
Here is a short quiz to work out which undertone you are.
There is another way to tell and this is by using jewellery. If you test gold against your skin and it suits your skintone better, it’s safe to say you have warm undertones and yes as you’ve probably guessed, if you wear silver and this suits your skin better you are likely to have cool undertones.
Honestly though, Regardless of what your undertone suggests you can rock warm, cool & neutral tones, a mix of all – its totally all about choosing what you feel comfortable in and what you feel your best self in, hell why not chuck all the colours of the rainbow on your eyes, totally down for that!!!
I am a neutral undertone and I gravitate towards warm tones, but recently I have been reaching for some more cooler tones and I love mixing them together. Makeup is all about having fun, but it’s also great to know your skin & what undertone you are, especially for foundations.
